Family Travel Story: Flying With Babies
PART I: THE STORY OF AN EASY TRAVEL BABY
Travelling, like practically everything else, is a unique experience with every baby. My first-born is outgoing and adventurous. (The first time we took her to a mall, she was so excited, nearly every passerby commented on how happy she was.) She loves noise and can sleep through construction but not conversation. The first time I took her on a plane was a breeze.
Alisha was six months old. I had booked the flight to coincide with her morning nap. As we walked through the airport going through check-in and security procedures, I felt Alisha begin to get sleepy on my back in the wrap carrier. I chatted with her, pointing out things to see. She stayed awake until we were seated on the plane. It had been a busy morning by then. As soon as we sat down, she wanted to nurse. Although I had hoped she would nurse to sleep as the plane took off, she was out before we even hit the runway. I was a little nervous that the ascent would make her ears pop and wake her. As it turned out, I needn’t have worried. She slept for an hour. When she woke, I took her to pee in the restroom, and she spent the rest of the flight smiling at the passengers around us.
As the months and years went by, not much has changed. She has progressed from nursing during take-off and landing to drinking juice through a straw to prevent ear popping discomfort. She doesn’t nap anymore. Now, instead of smiling cute baby-smiles, she finds someone with whom to start a conversation, or she watches commercials on the TV screen.
