Travel Canada: Taste and Sights of Vancouver
DINING WITH A VIEW AROUND VANCOUVER, BC
It was late in the day when we set out from Burnaby. He wouldn’t tell me where we were going, but from his casually dressy attire, I guessed somewhere special. We drove out towards the mountains.
Pulling into the parking lot, I looked around for a clue as to our whereabouts. A sign over a gondola station proclaimed this place to be Grouse Mountain. This was going to be exciting! I had never been on a gondola before.
As we bought tickets and headed onto The Skyride, a few others joined us. Then, up we went, slowly sliding up the side of the mountain. Below, Vancouver city, the Fraser River, the suburbs and valleys, all unfolded before us, the forest zooming out to a wonderous cityscape. Someone shouted out a hushed cry. A bear in the trees below! Where, where?! We all put our noses to the glass. The bear looked up at us, picked a few berries, and then ambled off into the forest again.
At the top of the ride, we browsed the gardens and admired the artwork. At last, the time of our reservation arrived. We entered The Observatory, a small room surrounded by glass on three sides, jutting out from the side of the mountain. Delicious smells wafted over to our table by the window. The sun sank behind the mountains. The stars came out. Soft lights winked on across the city below.
Nothing adds to a meal like a beautiful setting in which to partake. Granted you can always take a picnic to a beach or park setting. For a breathtaking view with fabulous service, try these establishments:
- The patio on The Boathouse on Denman Street overlooks English Bay. Consider dining at sunset.
- Monk McQueen’s on False Creek also has a gorgeous view of the water.
- Horizon’s grants a city view from beautiful Burnaby Mountain.
- The Observatory sits atop Grouse Mountain. Ride the gondola at dusk to watch the city unfold below you, then dine at the peak over city lights.
